Explore Downtown LA's LGBTQ+ History with fellow Rotarians!
You and fellow Rotarians will explore LA's significant Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, & Allied (LGBTQ+) sites and cultural landmarks that tell stories of perseverance, controversy, and liberation during the early fight for LGBTQ+ Equality. Learn how the City of Angels gave birth to a rich, vibrant and little-known LGBTQ+ local history. Discover how Los Angeles has frequently been the first and most influential region in the ongoing global fight for equality.
The Walk in Our Shoes LGBTQ+ History Tour of LA is presented by THE LAVENDER EFFECT® and sponsored by RISE (Rotarians In Service of Equality).
THE LAVENDER EFFECT® Out & About Tours offer customized guided tours for Students of all ages, Educators, DEI Advocates, Businesses, and Community Groups. Current offerings include the “Walk In Our Shoes” tour of Downtown Los Angeles, “LGBT-Tinseltown” tour of Hollywood, and “WeHo Rainbow” tour of West Hollywood. ABOUT YOUR TOUR GUIDES
Jim Anzide is an East Coast Transplant (although he’s been in LA for over 20 years) and never forgets his roots. He was born and raised in a Southern New Jersey suburb of Philadelphia called Turnersville – zip code EIEIO. Jim went to undergrad at James Madison University where he was a double major in Communications/Journalism and Hotel Restaurant Management. After a brief stint in the Big Apple, Jim continued on to University of Washington in Seattle where he received his MFA in Acting. Shortly after relocating in LA, Jim and a few friends founded The Ovation Award Winning – Circle X Theatre Co. where Jim was Artistic Director. In response to California’s Proposition 8, Out & About Tours – Hollywood’s 1st & Only Gay Bus Tour™ was birthed in 2009. Jim is employed by THE LAVENDER EFFECT® as their Guided Tours Manager.
Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Alex Boling has a BA in psychology from Yale University. He has had recurring guest star roles on SUBURGATORY, SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER, LAS VEGAS and WILL & GRACE, as well as guest stars and costars in almost every genre of episodic television. He has also appeared in many movies, national commercials, VO spots, and in musical theater & cabaret across the US & Norway. He loves encouraging people as an acting coach, as a volunteer for Project Angel Food, and as a volunteer leader in both the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles and SGI-USA, a lay Buddhist group for peace, culture, and education.
